Calphalon - Project PreHeat
Project type
Advanced Concepts- Product Design & Engineering
Date
2016 - 2017
Location
Atlanta, Georgia
While working for NEWELL BRANDS Corporate Advanced Technology team, I was involved in several early investigations on projects covering several Brands for Newell such as Rubbermaid Commercial, Irwin, Hilmor, Calphalon, Ball, etc. This advanced technology project was for Calphalon cookware. The concept developed on getting consistent and desirable results when you start at the correct temperature for specific food types. A digital display would communicate to you when the cooking vessel reached the correct temperature for a desired food type such as eggs - optimal cooking temperature of 250°F. I was tasked with developing the design, engineering, and manufacturing behind the cooking vessel communication method to the user. The direction entailed using a thermocouple that would be positioned on the bottom of a cooking vessel in the middle and than impact bonded between the aluminum vessel and stainless steel base plate (enabling that ability for inductive heating to be feasible from an inductive cooktop and still function on a gas or electric cooktop). Wires from the thermocouple would follow a path through the handle to a PC board with a processor that would communicate the temperature was reached through a digital display for a user selected food type. I created the graphics and outlined the process flow for the user interface for what the user would see on the display.
